"Concepts must be made. To be sure, they are not made just like that. It's not that one just says one day, "Look, I'm going to invent such and such a concept," no more than a painter says one day, "Look, I'm going to make a painting like this," or a filmmaker, "Look, I'm going to make such and such a film!" There must be a necessity, as much philosophy as elsewhere, for if not there is nothing at all."
Gilles Deleuze
The title of the exhibition refers to "What is the act of creation" lecture by French philosopher Gilles Deleuze, which he gave for the students of La Femis, France's national film school in 1987. In his lecture the philosopher speaks about what the creation of an idea is and what exactly a director, an artist, and a philosopher do when they wait for this idea to come, outline it and eventually realize it. The theme of the exhibition is focused at the artistic idea placed outside of an art context. It is an idea that would help to identify, and at best to fix a list of particular social, political, educational, ethical and aesthetic issues of Kazakhstan and Almaty. This list is long and not limited to the challenges of our country only. Currently the world is in a long-standing complicated succession of challenges that can be tantalizingly expressed in the language of art; and therefore it can propose strategies for escaping stagnation, hatred, consumerism, centralization and a number of other common human threats. There is a belief that politics and its vertical hierarchically framed imperative failed, as it happened globally and suddenly. The 20th century was the century of all political ideologies fall from communism to liberalism, which the intelligentsia noticed cleverly, though the great disappointment descends on us right now in the 21st century. This is that very moment to think, talk and act horizontally here at the bottom of the pyramid, where the art is generated always neighboring people.

A conventional politician, economist and athlete are way too focused on fulfilling their tasks in their field-specific professional world, and this obsession has deprived the majority of population the opportunity to think multidisciplinary, which means that we are like moles digging deeper and deeper down the issue but we do not see it and cannot understand it. Only an artist can be detached from the 'rat race', and this ideology is enough to escape imposture, to observe and make connections, to find junctions of the little parts of truth like amber in the sand. The Artist is Asleep by Elena and Viktor Vorobyevs went to the Venice Biennale, but the artist has still not closed his eyes. Through sleepiness and inactivity his personal refusal to participate, which is his way of struggle, the artist keeps on watching, and this is the most precious thing that humanity can take from him.
Act of Creation
This exhibition is an attempt to find a different angle of view, that is not imposed from outside. Therefore it would be important to emphasize that artists are also encouraged to rethink the traditional relationship between a curator and an artist that also presupposes a kind of pyramidal superstructure, for which it is often criticized. Each artist can personally choose the subject of his research and later offer a solution in an artistic way. The idea can be absurd, utopian, serious or comic, but it has to be possible within the framework of real world or invented reality. The artist takes responsibility in front of the world and gives the key to the world in return; it is a key to some solution, and the more complicated the key is, the more important the artistic expression will be. The artist needs to document the process of his search, the obstacles he/she faced, both creative and ordinary. It is important to understand that the act in this exhibition is in the first place, and the object of art comes only second. The object should serve as a consequence of the act, a trophy brought with it from the road, but not a sacral ambition placed in the white walls of a beautiful room. In this case art itself falls into the rhetoric of consumption and as a result into the crisis of expression. An art work is a proof of the act of creation and an entrance to the idea the artist is offering.
